Another SEO (kinda) post, this time about favicons. Now, some of you may not know what a favicon is, so I’ll give a brief explanation. A favicon is a small picture that appears beside your URL and on Tabs to represent your website. It also shows up besides any bookmarks that someone may have for your website.

Now, the question is, why is this useful? A few reasons, really. First and foremost, it’s an easy way for your viewers to get back to your website. If they have three or four pages with similar titles, then it can be hard for them to find the site again. On the other hand, if you have a unique favicon, then it makes it much easier for them to find it.

Placing a favicon on your site is easy. Making them can be hard. Therefore, I found a site that makes it REALLY easy to make a favicon. The site is called Favicons Generator Tool, and all it requires is an image. Any image will do, but something that will be easy to see when it become a 32×32 pixel image is the best. If you look at the URL on this site, you will see an image of handcuffs beside it. That is the favicon.

So, now that you have the image, what do you do. If your on your own site, simply upload the image that has a .ico as the extension (such as man.ico) to your root (that uppermost directory that will show up on the web.) Now, wordpress needs a bit more.

If your on a wordpress.com, then your shit out of luck. However, if your self hosted (in other words, you have your own hosting with the wordpress software on it), then download the Maxpress Favicon plugin here. You will have to register it, but it’s a simple email (use a spam email account, as they constantly send you emails about WordPress and plugins). Unzip the file, and upload it to you wp-contect/plugins directory, and activate it. The plugin has an easy to use upload tool for grabbing that icon from your computer.

Now, people will be able to see that your a bit more then a simple blogger. You have a favicon.

New Site

Well, now I have the site hosted.  Hopefully, nothing will go wrong this time…..
